LACPA Exam Subjects Explained: What Each Paper Tests and How to Prepare

Balance Brightness blog cover: LACPA Exam Subjects Explained: What Each Paper Tests and How to Prepare

Short answer: the LACPA exam tests what a practising Lebanese auditor must know: financial reporting under IFRS, auditing, Lebanese taxation and commercial law, and professional ethics. Candidates prepare for it as four coached subjects, managerial accounting, IFRS, auditing, and Lebanese law and taxation, with ethics running through the audit and law material. The paper that decides most results is Lebanese law and taxation, because it is the one no international textbook prepares you for.

This guide takes each subject in turn: what the examiners are testing, where candidates lose marks, and how to prepare for the paper rather than the topic.

What are the LACPA exam subjects?

IFAC's profile of the Lebanese profession confirms the gate: a university degree, supervised practice under a LACPA member, and LACPA's professional examinations [Source: IFAC, Lebanon profile]. What those examinations cover shows in LACPA's own published past papers, which include a stand-alone IFRS paper [Source: LACPA, IFRS December 2020 exam], and in the syllabus candidates prepare: financial reporting under IFRS, auditing, Lebanese taxation and commercial law, and ethics. The content of each session is decided by the LACPA Council and adopted by its Exams Committee under the association's bylaws [Source: LACPA Internal Bylaws].

That syllabus is why the exam is different from the US CPA or the CMA. It is not a test of accounting in general. It is a test of whether you can be trusted to audit and advise a Lebanese company under Lebanese law, using the international reporting framework Lebanon has adopted. Every subject should be studied with that question in mind. The LACPA exam requirements guide covers eligibility; here we stay on the papers themselves.

What does the IFRS paper test?

The IFRS paper tests whether you can apply the standards to real transactions, not recite them. LACPA's published past paper from the December 2020 session is an IFRS exam, which tells you two things: the subject is examined on its own, and the association shares past papers you should be working through [Source: LACPA, IFRS December 2020 exam]. IFRS is required for companies in more than 140 jurisdictions [Source: IFRS Foundation], and Lebanon adopted it for companies by ministerial decision [Source: IFAC, Lebanon profile], which is why the paper sits at the centre of the exam.

Where candidates lose marks: revenue recognition under IFRS 15, leases under IFRS 16, impairment, and the presentation questions that ask for a full set of statements rather than a journal entry. The fix is to practise complete answers against past-style scenarios until the format is automatic. That is the whole design of the IFRS for LACPA Exam subject. If you also want IFRS as a working skill beyond the exam, the IFRS Mastery program is the practitioner version; our article on IFRS versus GAAP explains where the frameworks part ways.

What does the auditing paper test?

The auditing paper tests the audit process from engagement acceptance to the report: planning, risk assessment, evidence, sampling, and the wording of the opinion. Because only LACPA-licensed CPAs may conduct audits and issue audit reports in Lebanon [Source: IFAC], this paper is the one most directly tied to the license itself. The examiners want to see that you can decide what evidence is sufficient and what opinion the evidence supports.

Ethics is examined largely through this paper. Independence threats, safeguards and the auditor's duties come up as short scenario questions, and candidates who treat ethics as a separate chapter to skim usually miss them. Prepare audit and ethics together, and practise writing an audit opinion paragraph that matches a given set of findings. The Auditing for LACPA Exam subject is built around that skill; the wider Modern Auditing program is for the job rather than the paper.

What does the Lebanese law and taxation paper test?

This paper tests the Lebanese tax code and commercial law as an examiner frames them: short statutory questions and longer applied cases. It covers income tax, VAT, which Lebanon levies at a standard rate of 11% [Source: PwC Worldwide Tax Summaries, Lebanon], payroll and social security obligations, and the commercial code provisions that govern companies and the accountant's professional duties.

This is the paper most candidates carry, for one reason: it is Lebanese, and nothing in an international accounting degree covers it. Candidates who have prepared for the CPA or CMA arrive fluent in theory and unprepared for the local paper. The remedy is to study the law as it is written and practise the case style the examiners favour. The Law and Taxation for LACPA Exam subject does exactly that, and it is the single subject most often taken on its own by candidates resitting one paper. For the practitioner version, see Lebanese Accounting Law in Practice.

What does the managerial accounting subject cover?

Managerial accounting covers costing, budgeting, variance analysis and decision analysis: the tools an auditor uses to judge whether a client's numbers make sense and a practitioner uses to advise one. It is the least local of the four coached subjects and the one candidates with a strong degree find most familiar, which makes it a good place to bank marks early in your preparation. The same body of knowledge is what the CMA designation is built on: the Institute of Management Accountants devotes an entire part of its two-part CMA exam to financial planning, performance and analytics [Source: Certified Management Accountant, Wikipedia].

Where candidates lose marks is speed rather than knowledge. Costing and variance questions are calculation-heavy, and under time pressure small arithmetic slips compound. Practise under timed conditions and show workings so that a slip costs one mark, not the question. The Managerial Accounting for LACPA Exam subject drills the calculation patterns the paper returns to every sitting.

How should you order the four subjects in a study plan?

Start with the paper you are weakest in, which for most candidates is Lebanese law and taxation, and pair it with managerial accounting so that a heavy reading subject sits beside a calculation subject. Then take IFRS and auditing together, because audit evidence questions lean on reporting knowledge and the two reinforce each other. Finish with a month of mixed practice across all four under exam timing.

Members of the profession are also required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of continuing professional development every year after they qualify [Source: IFAC], which is worth knowing now: the exam is the entry to a profession that keeps studying, so build habits rather than cram. Whatever order you choose, plan it backwards from the sitting LACPA announces and leave two weeks clear at the end.

How Balance Brightness teaches the four subjects

Balance Brightness teaches the LACPA syllabus as one coordinated track rather than four separate courses, so the overlaps between papers are taught once and the study calendar covers the whole exam. Mahmoud Chehade has practised Lebanese accounting, audit and tax for 30 years and has trained more than 500 professionals; the Lebanese law and tax material in particular is taught by someone who files under the rules the examiners test.

The LACPA Certification Program covers all four subjects for about 20% less than taking them separately, in person on Hamra Main Street in Beirut or live online, in English or Arabic. Candidates resitting one paper take that subject alone. Read what past candidates say on our reviews page, or ask us which subject to start with.

Frequently asked questions

Which LACPA exam subject is the hardest?

For most candidates, Lebanese law and taxation. It is not conceptually harder than IFRS or auditing, but it is the only paper that an international accounting education leaves entirely uncovered, so candidates arrive with the least preparation. The IFRS paper is the second most common resit, usually because of presentation questions that demand full statements. Managerial accounting is generally the easiest paper to bank marks in.

Can I sit the LACPA subjects one at a time?

The structure of each session is decided by LACPA, so confirm with the association how papers are sat and how passes carry between sessions. From a preparation standpoint, you can absolutely study one subject at a time, and candidates carrying a single paper routinely prepare for that paper alone. The full program is the better route if you are sitting everything, because it is planned as one calendar and costs less than four separate starts.

Do I need to know US GAAP for the LACPA exam?

No. The LACPA exam is built on IFRS, which Lebanon has adopted, not on US GAAP. Knowing the differences is useful context if you also plan to sit the US CPA, but studying GAAP for the LACPA exam is wasted effort. Spend that time on how IFRS is applied to Lebanese entities and on the Lebanese tax and commercial law paper.

Is ethics a separate LACPA paper?

Ethics is part of the LACPA syllabus, and in practice it is examined mainly through the auditing and law material: independence, safeguards, professional duties and conduct. Prepare it alongside audit rather than as a stand-alone chapter, and expect it in scenario form. Confirm the current paper structure with LACPA, which decides the content of each session.

The bottom line

The LACPA exam is four coached subjects with one purpose: proving you can audit and advise a Lebanese company under Lebanese law using IFRS. Bank marks in managerial accounting, master the presentation questions in IFRS, prepare audit and ethics together, and give Lebanese law and taxation the time it demands, because that is the paper that decides most results. Prepare for the papers the examiners set, in the order that fits your weaknesses, and start from the date of the sitting. The LACPA Certification Program is built around exactly that plan.

This article is general guidance for exam candidates and is not legal or tax advice. LACPA decides the content and structure of each examination session; confirm current details with the association.
